A gas explosion destroys a Mogul rig off Sicily, leaving a single survivor. Willy Izard goes to Cefalù to settle compensation and finds that a lawyer with Mafia connections, Giovanni Coltroni, has taken charge of the bereaved families and the local fishermen. Meanwhile Peter Thornton is ordered to tow a replacement rig across the Atlantic, through hurricane waters where the insurers will not cover it.
